Speaking in Tongues, 1999

Speaking In Tongues: Performing Generations Exhibition, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, 1999. An interactive online performative video, initiated by indifference to the plight of women living under repressive regimes, questioning the relationship between viewer and artist-as-creator-of-media.

The woman’s movement is ambiguous and restricted, confined to her shallow, insular space. Online viewers are invited to create a narrative for her situation by choosing a soundtrack from any or all of the twelve icons on the screen (example; footsteps, whispering, cloth tearing, glass breaking).
